Standard Procedures for Optimizing Windows 95:

1.  Delete files in temp directory.

a. From Windows 95, click Start, choose Programs, and select MS-DOS prompt.

b. At any DOS prompt, type SET

c. Record the directory listed for “temp.”


d. Change to the directory you recorded in step 1.c. by typing CD\directory, i.e. D\WINDOWS\TEMP and press {ENTER}.

e. Type DEL *.* and press {ENTER}.  Respond with Y when prompted “Are you sure?”


f.  Type EXIT to return to Windows.


2.  Run thorough scandisk and automatically fix errors.


Note:  This may take up to two hours to run.

a. From Windows 95, click START, choose Programs, choose Accessories,  choose System Tools, and select Scandisk.

b. From within the scandisk screen, select the “Type of test” as Thorough. Click     the box to “Automatically fix errors.”

c. From within the scandisk screen, click the START button to begin the     scandisk.

d. When it is finished, click the OK button.


3.  Run defrag and automatically fix errors.

Note:This may take up to two hours to run.

a. From Windows 95, click START, choose Programs, choose Accessories, choose System Tools, and select Disk Defragmenter.

b. When prompted for the drive to defragment, select drive C: and click OK.

c. Regardless of what percentage of the drive defrag reports as “fragmented,” click the Advanced button.

d. Select the “Defragmentation method” as Full defragmentation. Click the box to “Check drive for errors.”

e. Select the button to “Save these options and use them every time.”

f.  Click OK to exit the Advanced window. From within the Disk defragmenter screen, click the START button to begin the disk defragmentation.

g.    When it is finished, click the OK button.

 


NetWare

Standard Procedures for Optimizing NetWare:

1.    Once per month run a purge.

Note: This procedure must be done on each volume.

a. Login to Windows 95 as Admin on a 4.x/5.x server or as Supervisor on a 3.x server.

b. From Windows 95, click Start, choose Programs, and select MS-DOS prompt.

c. From any DOS prompt, type MAP and press {ENTER}.  This will display the drive letters which are associated with the directories and volumes on your file server.

Record the drive letters which are associated with SERVER/VOLUME: DIRECTORY where “SERVER” is the name of your file server and  “VOLUME” is the name of the volume we will be purging.  (You may have more than one drive letter pointing to the same “VOLUME” but  different “DIRECTORIES.” Just  record one of the letters.  Likewise, you may have more than one “VOLUME”.  Record letter for each volume.

e. Change to the drive letter you recorded in step 1.e. by typing                                  DRIVELETTER: , i.e. F:, and press {ENTER}.

f.   Change to the root of that drive by typing CD\ and pressing {ENTER}

g.  Type PURGE   /ALL and press {ENTER}.

h.  Once the purge is complete, you will be returned to your DOS prompt. Repeat steps 1.f., 1.g., and 1.h. for each volume you recorded in step 1.e.

2.    Once per month make sure servers are patched with the latest service packs.

WARNING! Do not attempt this step alone if you are not familiar with applying patches to your server.

a. Novell maintains a “minimum patch list” on their website.  Listed in this minimum patch list are the latest patches for all currently supported versions of Novell’s products.

b. Download each of the patches marked “New!” for your version of operating system.  Put each file in its own folder on your file server.

c. Once the file isdownloaded, extract the file by double clicking on it.

d  Each extracted, downloaded file contains a .txt file with instructions on what the patch does and installation instructions on installing this patch.  Read that file by double clicking on it and follow the installation instructions for that service patch.

3.  Once per two months down the server and restart.

a. From the file server console, press CTRL ESC and select “System Console” from the menu.

b. At the “SERVER:” prompt, type DOWN and press {ENTER}.  When the server has completed is shutdown process, you will see a message to “Type EXIT to exit to DOS.”

c. Type EXIT and press {ENTER}.

d . At the current DOS prompt, type SERVER and press {ENTER}.  This will restart the server.

4.     Once per two months run a volume repair.

WARNING:  Do not attempt this if you are unfamiliar with the VREPAIR utility.

a. From the file server console, press CTRL ESC and select “System Console”        from the menu.

b. At the “SERVER:” prompt, type VOLUMES and press {ENTER}.  A list of volumes that are on your server will be displayed.  Record all volumes displayed.

c. At the “SERVER:” prompt, type DISMOUNT  VOLUME  where VOLUME  is the name of the first volume you recorded in step 4.c.

d. Repeat step 4.d. for each of the volumes you recorded in step 4.c. Once all volumes are dismounted, type LOAD C:VREPAIR and press {ENTER}.

e. Choose #1 to “Repair a volume.”

f.  Choose the number associated with the volume you wish to repair

g. Select the option to “Do not pause after errors.”

h. Select the option to “Continue with volume repair.”

i.  Repeat steps 4.i. and 4.j. until the total errors listed in the top right corner of the screen are at zero when the volume repair is completed.

j.  Repeat steps 4.g. through 4.k. for each volume you recorded in step 4.c.

k. Select the option to “Exit” once the volume repair is complete.

l. Down and restart the server as listed in #3 above.

5.          For NetWare 4 systems only – once per month, run a Directory Services Repair.

WARNING:  Do not attempt this if you are unfamiliar with Directory Services maintenance.

a. From the file server console, press CTRL ESC and select “System Console’ from the menu.

b. At the “SERVER:” prompt, type LOAD DSREPAIR and press {ENTER}.

c. Select “Unattended Full Repair.”

d. Repeat step 5.d. until the Total Errors reads zero.

e. Press {ESC} to exit dsrepair and select “Yes” to confirm exit.
